Computational and experimental cardiovascular and cerebrovascular biomechanics, advancing mechanical thrombectomy and flow-diverter technologies for acute ischemic stroke treatment and intracranial aneurysm management.
CardioTech Lab at IIT Guwahati, led by Dr. Mahesh Nagargoje, advances cardiovascular and cerebrovascular biomechanics through computational modeling, experiments, and AI-driven approaches.
We integrate computational fluid dynamics (CFD), in-vitro experiments, medical-device modeling, and AI to develop patient-specific solutions for better cardiovascular and cerebrovascular care.
Our research tackles two key challenges: making mechanical thrombectomy safer and more effective, and optimizing flow-diverter devices to promote cerebral aneurysm healing and reduce rupture risk.
Computational and experimental cardiovascular and cerebrovascular biomechanics, medical device innovation, and patient-specific treatment strategies.
Mechanical thrombectomy is a minimally invasive treatment for acute ischemic stroke caused by a large-vessel occlusion. The procedure restores cerebral blood flow by removing the clot using either aspiration thrombectomy or a stent retriever, with the choice depending on clot and vessel characteristics.
We model these thrombectomy techniques using finite element modeling and validate the computational findings using in vitro flow-loop experiments. Our goal is to develop and optimize thrombectomy devices through in silico trials, enabling systematic evaluation of device performance under clinically relevant conditions.

A flow diverter is a fine mesh stent placed across an aneurysm neck to redirect blood along the parent vessel, cutting the inflow that drives growth and rupture and promoting healing. We use patient-specific CFD to predict how a given device reshapes intra-aneurysmal hemodynamics — velocity, wall shear stress and residence time.
The goal: help clinicians choose and position the right device for each aneurysm.
